This course covers advanced XML processing for programmers with a mainframe background. It starts with a review of the XML fundamentals and then focuses on real processing of XML data using JavaScript, Java and .NET. A quick overview of Java, JavaScript and C# is provided so that the students can understand the examples presented. The teaching style is learning by example. Many coding examples are shown with each topic to clarify the concepts of XML data processing. Topics covered include validation of XML documents using DTDs and Schemes, generating XML documents on the server, converting data retrieved from databases to XML, DOM and SAX parsers, using XPath to filter and sort data with a DOM parser, XSL and XSLT processing. The course also introduces SOAP and creation of Web Services. Finally, the new popular technology based on XML called – AJAX is introduced and its use in silent updates in the browser is demonstrated.
