Audience

Application programmers who have responsibility to design and code applications using IMS data communications and Message Format Services (MFS); IMSADF application programmers.

Description

This course is designed for application programmers who need a detailed understanding of designing, coding and testing IMS on-line transactions using IMS data communication functions and Message Format Services.

This course provides 5 programming exercises for the attendee too complete.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Design, code and test simple and complex IMS transactions
  • Describe common pitfalls inherent in on-line processing and techniques to avoid them

Prior programming experience.

  1. Characteristics of IMS Online system (control region, message region, batch message region) vs. Batch DLI/DBB
  2. IMS transaction flow and message scheduling
  3. DL/I calls associated with processing IMS messages
  4. Testing with BTS
  5. Coding simple and complex screens using MFS
  6. Error handling, synchronization point and rollback usage
  7. Physical and logical paging
  8. Designing complex online transactions (conversional)
